Supplementation needs to be personalized!

Are you confused about which supplements you need to take, and how much? Probably you heard that you should take multivitamins, but then someone else is saying that you don’t need to because the food you eat contains enough nutrients already? Which one is true?

At this point, we can really no longer make the same recommendations to everyone. Even with people who appear similar and lead similar lives, at the same time they are so individual and biochemically unique. And while I wish that it was true that we can get everything that we need from our food, unfortunately that’s not the case, so I personally believe that we all do need to take some form of supplements to maintain our health and/or to heal ourselves.

We do need to be careful which supplements we buy, and which forms of vitamins we use. As I have mentioned in previous articles, our needs depend on our individual lifestyle choices, our genetic differences, and what we each want to achieve. I know, you’re probably thinking “I don’t know all of this, can’t I just take one multivitamin a day?” If you are generally healthy with no digestive issues, then yes! However I still suggest that you check with your GP to make sure that you are taking a good quality multivitamin that is really benefiting you, and not causing more harm than good.

Whatever health problems you may have, they are most likely coming from some imbalances in the body’s system, which is either caused by, or will lead to, vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

For healthy individuals it’s safe to suggest vitamin C, vitamin D and magnesium supplementation. For other vitamins and minerals it’s best to check before you use — you should talk with your nutritionist, naturopath, or with your physician. Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion, though, as unfortunately a lot of physicians do not see vitamins and minerals as a source of medicine.

It’s also important that you use high quality brands, that use the best quality ingredients. Personally, I use, and recommend to my clients: Metagenics, Pure Encapsulation, AOR (Advanced Orthomolecular Research), Biotics Research Corporation, Youngevity, Flora, NOW, and Douglas Laboratories. You can of course choose whatever brands you want, just be careful to compare the ingredients and choose the highest quality.

If, having read this, you are not convinced that you need vitamin or mineral supplementation, then I highly recommend new documentary Secret Ingredients. You can even just watch the trailer! It shows a lot of what has happened to our soil, and GMOs (genetically modified food). You can watch it at https://secretingredientsmovie.com/.
