The surprising benefits of baking soda!

We all use baking soda for cooking, some of you may sometimes use it for cleaning too. But actually you can use it in so many other ways, and it is incredibly effective!

I use (aluminum free) baking soda:

  • For washing clothes — it’s a perfect non-toxic laundry detergent
  • For cleaning the house — sinks, floors, and carpet (before vacuuming, just sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and wait 10 minutes)
  • It’s an almost instant relief for stomach ache
  • It’s a perfect toothpaste — try mixing with coconut oil and peppermint oil (organic and therapeutic grade)
  • It’s a very effective dry shampoo
  • Mix with any oil, such as coconut or apricot oil, and use for peeling on your body or face
  • If you have a pet, it’s a great remedy for fleas
  • It provides fast relief for insect bites and rashes

So what is baking soda?

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is a white, odorless, crystalline powder with a slightly alkaline taste. It is commonly used as a pH buffering agent, an electrolyte replenisher, a systemic alkalizer and in topical cleansing solutions.

Taking it orally can help in the treatment of metabolic acidosis, and it increases the body’s pH level. In other words, it makes your body less acidic and more alkaline. This helps provide symptomatic relief for an upset stomach that’s often associated with hyperacidity. It may also be used in the treatment of the symptoms of peptic ulcer disease. It’s also been shown to enhance sprint performance.

It can also be used locally on skin for various disorders such as acne.

And it’s even an effective treatment for kidney toxicity, that results from chemical damage of acute uranium exposures. Did you know that uranium is present in a lot of the public water supply? If you’d like to read more about that then this article has a lot of information.

Also you may like to read this other article on my website for more information on many of the other invisible dangers in your home.

Of course, especially when taking orally, make sure that you start by trying small amounts, for example 1/3 teaspoon in a glass of water, and monitor your body’s reaction. How you feel, and what benefits you get from sodium bicarbonate, are way more important than what any science says!

If you’re taking it orally, then it’s just important to note that by altering gastric and urinary pH, antacids may alter rates of dissolution and absorption, the bioavailability, and renal elimination of a number of drugs. So in general, it is sensible to not take antacids and drugs at the same time — instead, take antacids, like baking soda, 2 hours before or after ingestion of other drugs.
