Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating toxins through the colon and the liver. When we give our body the essential nutrients that it needs, it will naturally detox every day. Increasing our water intake will also help the detoxification process.
Detoxifying our body will help speed up weight loss, it will affect our mood and energy levels, and can even help heal diseases such as diabetes.
Here are a few suggestions that will help you detox your body.
Eating enough organically grown fruit and vegetables, especially dark green vegetables, helps the body’s cleansing process. The kale and spinach that we have on Molokai are perfect. Dark green veggies are rich in chlorophyll, which alkalinizes the blood. They also contain fiber, which keeps the colon healthy by increasing bowel movements. You can juice your vegetables, although I prefer blending rather than juicing, as many of the nutrients and fiber are lost during the juicing process. For fruits it is always better to blend them than juice them — when you juice you’re losing the fiber but keeping all the sugar, so you end up with a drink that’s very high in sugar.
Other good options include dark cherries, blueberries, and strawberries. These are high in antioxidants and vitamin C, which also helps the body during its cleansing process.
Herbal tea is also great for the detox process. I drink burdock root, dandelion root, ginger, and senna teas regularly, and I also drink green tea daily. Green tea is loaded with polyphenols, such as flavonoids and catechins, which work as powerful antioxidants. Green tea is also a great substitute for coffee. Just be sure when you’re drinking tea that you use clean water, ideally purified, for brewing it.
Eating real food, and not man-made, processed food, will give your body enough nutrients and help it body cleanse itself. Add at least one serving of veggies to every meal, and you will see a huge change without even needing to go on a diet.
